Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physiotherapy used to assess and treat the symptoms caused by vestibular dysfunction. Vestibular dysfunction is often accompanied by symptoms such as vertigo (spinning), dizziness, gaze instability, headache, tinnitus, nausea/vomiting, and hearing loss. These symptoms along with altered vestibular function can result in impaired balance, falls, depression, anxiety, and a disruption of activities of daily living.

Your vestibular rehabilitation assessment will start by taking a thorough history of your symptoms and medical history, neurological testing, and objective tests using infrared goggles. The treatment for vestibular issues involves maneuvers and progressive exercises designed to reduce vestibular related symptoms. Vestibular rehabilitation has been shown to be effective for treating a variety of vestibular related conditions (ie. benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuritis, unilateral vestibular hypofunction, vestibular migraines, and cervicogenic dizziness) and can be implemented by a physiotherapist trained in vestibular therapy.

Vestibular dysfunction also frequently presents in concussed individuals. Far too often, these dysfunctions go undiagnosed leading to delayed recovery and persistent symptoms. If you’re experiencing vestibular symptoms or ongoing symptoms from a concussion, you may benefit from a vestibular assessment and vestibular rehabilitation.
